Work-in-Progress Wednesday Book Cover Art Makeover – FASHION FRENCHIES Cover Makeover: FINISHED fancy vest!

Here’s Marty’s final outfit for Fashion Frenchies 1: Love Potion Commotion!

In the Fashion Frenchies series, Marty the French bulldog loves getting dressed up because it brings smiles to all his fans who follow his mom’s dog fashion blog!Completed dog clothing illustration. The smiling white French bulldog now wears a pink tuxedo vest and short-sleeved white shirt! Nicely inked and digitally colored. He stands against a plain blue background so I can do a full cover reveal later.

I’ve completed one other costume for Marty and one other costume for his mom, Vivian, since finishing this one! My foundational work is paying off and once I draw the costume, the actual finishing work comes together quite quickly!

Kickstarter coming this spring! I hope you’ll join me for it!

Work-in-Progress Wednesday Book Cover Art Makeover – FASHION FRENCHIES Cover Makeover: fancy vest!

The past few weeks, I did minor adjustments to the prototype cover, and I’m finally happy with it. Now I can move on to specific costumes!

For Love Potion Commotion!, Fashion Frenchies Book 1, I decided to put Marty in a pink tuxedo vest with bow tie! I’ll clean up the inks digitally and color it so I can add it to the book cover proper.

Scan of a dog clothing drawing. The French bulldog was printed out in a light value. The costume was roughed over the printout in red Col-erase pencil (which can barely be seen) and inked with black Sharpie marker.

Work-in-Progress Wednesday Book Cover Art Makeover – FASHION FRENCHIES Cover Makeover: ruby red!

More progress on my FASHION FRENCHIES book cover rebranding!

I took some time on a printout to rough out a simpler #background (a la BEWITCHED) before working on it digitally. There, I discovered I had room for a sewing machine, which lead to a roll of fabric. I thought it looked nice so I’m going to work on it more!

I think the characters really pop against this color, but I’m wondering if it’s too dark a color an uplifting fantasy comedy. What do you think?

Hopefully I can move on to the outfits soon. 🙂

"Fashion Frenchies" series book cover. Background is now a ruby red-pink cover. A smiling French bulldog, inked with flat colors, now stands on a simple table built of flat vector shapes. Next to him is a simple sewing machine with some fabric on it. Behind him, a sassy fashion grandmain a simple placeholder black dress stands with one arm akimbo. She appears to be throwing a roll of magical fabric with her other hand.
Simple cabinets are indicated at the top, providing backdrop for the series and title text in a retro script font: FASHION FRENCHIES BOOK 1: LOVE POTION COMMOTION.

More rebranding work on the FASHION FRENCHIES series book covers. (I wanna release FASHION FRENCHIES 2: THE POOCH SALUTE! in Spring 2025 and thought I’d redo the cover to FASHION FRENCHIES 1: LOVE POTION COMMOTION! while I was at it)

I buckled down last week and inked both characters. I’m keeping simple fill for colors–because these are now “paper dolls”! They’ll have different themed outfits for each book cover!

I also bought a new typeface (font) for the titles, after another set didn’t work out (I had to get a refund!)

And I’m working on a series logo (which is currently kicking my butt, yikes!). You might see a progress bit on it next week.

Enjoy!

FASHION FRENCHIES series book cover, work in progress. Background is still puce (grey-purpley). A smiling French Bulldog, now fully inked with flat colors, now stands on a simple table built of flat vector shapes. Behind him, a newly-inked, fully-colored sassy elderly lady in a simple placeholder black dress stands with arm akimbo.
Shelves are indicated at the top with darker rectangles, and neon purple lines roughly indicate fabric rolls that will go up there.

Steel City, Veiled Kingdom (my epic-length flagship sci-fi novel) turns 5 today!

Cover for STEEL CITY, VEILED KINGDOM: THE COMPLETE EDITION - A man in a labcoat holding a rabbit on a strange device, with a monster in the background.

Amazing painting by Katie Payne (https://www.katiepayne.com/)

Today, my flagship sci-fi/fantasy novel Steel City, Veiled Kingdom turns 5!

Lately I’ve been referring to SCVK (the shortened version of Steel City‘s title; all the cool kids are using it) as my GATTACA novel; I wrote it without any expectations of writing another novel, so I put my entire heart into it, like it was the only thing I was ever going to write.

Obviously I was wrong! I’ve since written many other novels and short stories–including a sequel to this very book!

If you like EPIC-length sci-fi drama full of vivid characters, intriguing culture clashes, and occasional humor, you’ll want to give Steel City, Veiled Kingdom a look!

WIP Wednesday Book Cover Art Sketch – Fashion Frenchies Cover Makeover

As you may remember, I’m looking to release FASHION FRENCHIES 2: THE POOCH SALUTE! in Spring 2025. I figured while I was at it, I’d redo the cover to FASHION FRENCHIES 1: LOVE POTION COMMOTION!

So here’s a working sketch of the main human character, Vivian Feng. She’s like Iris Apfel (RIP), but Chinese and for dog fashion.

Red cartoony sketch of an old woman smiling and gesturing

Yes, I went full BEWITCHED on this. She’ll have some thicc Edna Mode-style glasses, but I thought I’d add those digitally. This will be inked by hand and then scanned in. Then I have to come up with some outfits!

5 Favorites for December 2024: Useful, Refreshing, Cozy, Organized, and Healthy

“5 Favorites” is a recurring feature here at Pixelvania Publishing. On the last Friday of every month, I post 5 FAVORITE THINGS I’ve recently (or not-so-recently) enjoyed, in case you’re looking for something neat to experience. Visit the 5 Favorites archive for more recommendations.

👛👝 Big Skinny

Super-thin wallets and purses

I love this company; I have a number of their products (wallet, business card holder). They REALLY are thin and durable! And lots of them come in fun colors or patterns. There’s a style for everyone, including wallets that double as phone holders for those of you into that. I have an Executive Checkbook Bi-Fold Wallet but for a long time I considered the Slimvelope, and my friend got the Taxicat Bi-Fold Wallet. I got my husband a Slim Tri-fold in leather, and it really is a lot slimmer than the previous hamburger he used to carry around in his pocket.

🥤🍒 7-Up – Shirley Temple flavored

Limited time soda flavor

I’m a big Shirley Temple (the drink) fan so when this came out I had to try it. I WAS VERY PLEASED. It’s supposed to be limited edition, so stock up now while you can!

Sadly, I cannot recommend the “Zero” version: the artificial aftertaste was too strong for me. But I want to give SPECIAL PROPS to the lady behind me at the grocery store who broke open her 12-pack of Zero so I could try a single can!

🧣 Funky Junque Women’s Infinity Scarf

Hubby got me a few of these for Christmas. Very chunky and cozy. I love an infinity scarf, it’s a very easy way to stay warm and add a pop of color to a basic outfit.

Printable Half-Sheet Habit Tracker

by PhenixPrintable on Etsy

Every week I try to get a few specific tasks done daily, both for fun and for productivity. But the list was growing really big, and I was having trouble finding room to track ’em in my planner. So I thought I’d try an insertable half-sheet tracker. I’ve been pretty happy with the “Week Of” one seen in this set, but this set has a variety, including one chart that could track an entire year’s worth of habits!
This is a digital download, so you pay for it once, and print off however many you need. Very reasonably priced, I think!

I reduce the size to 84% and then use my Happy Planner punch to add it to my discbound planner.

I also bought this other set, by Puffin Planners on Etsy, but I haven’t tried it yet.

🌮 Chicken Nacho Casserole

Recipe

New Year’s is coming, which means everyone’s (usually) trying to eat a little healthier. I’ve been making this recipe for a couple months now, and it’s been a big blessing! Even though it’s a healthier recipe, it combines the legit tastiness of nachos with the convenience of a casserole.
Now, we’re not on a big strict diet thing, so we use salt-in beans (I like Bush’s black beans in the blue can). I also sub our fave red salsa in for the fire roasted tomatoes.

This ends my 5 Favorites for 2024. Do you like this series? Gimme a comment and let me know!

See you next year!

Happy 6th birthday to this magical mashup of the legend of Santa Claus!

Cover for MIDWINTER MAGIC: A stylized glowing reindeer leaps against the blue Northern Lights

Swooshy glowy reindeer, whee!

Six years ago on this date, I published MIDWINTER MAGIC: THREE ORIGINAL CHRISTMAS FAIRY TALES. It’s one of my favorites, but (I think) kinda underappreciated. From the back cover:

Reindeer sisters determined to remain free…

An elf prince seeking a cure for his dying mother…

A humble toymaker entrusted with an impossible task…

These unlikely heroes come together in Midwinter Magic, three lyrical fairy tales that weave together and reimagine these timeless legends of Christmas.

Midwinter Magic is an enchanting, evocative treat for fairy tale lovers ages 7 to 107.

If you appreciated that Santa’s reindeer in Red One were females, ever wondered how they got those names, or if you like the fairy tale work of Jane Yolen or Ursula Vernon, I hope you’ll take a chance on reading Midwinter Magic.
